About the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia
Founded 10th July 1885
The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (Inc.) is a voluntary, not-for profit organisation for advancing geographical science and promoting public interest in, and awareness and enjoyment of, Geography and related topics. Membership of the RGSSA is by subscription and is open to anyone who supports its objectives. Among the members are lay people from many walks of life, as well as professional geographers and teachers of geography. Several categories of membership are available, including interstate, overseas and student membership. While the Society takes a special interest in the geography of South Australia and its immediate region, our field of interest and our lecture programme extends very much to the global scale. The Society is always interested in welcoming new members.
The Society is governed by a Council elected according to its Rules. Routine administration is handled by an Executive Committee chaired by the President, and by a series of other Committees responsible to the Council (Publications, Library, Geographical Heritage, Awards, Programme and Information Technology). Many interested members of the Society serve on these Committees, which are not restricted to Councillors only.
